Way up north, where grapes have been grown on the slopes of the Danube since the time of the Thracians, lies Chateau Burgozone – a cellar shaped like a fortress and named after a Roman fort. Burgozone is a boutique family winery in Northwest Bulgaria situated near the town of Oryahovo on the banks of the river Danube overlooking Esperanto island. The winery takes its name after the Roman fortress Burgozone built on the ancient Roman road Via Istrum. Through the centuries the region has been celebrated as one of the main wine regions of Bulgaria.
All the wines are made from handpicked and sorted grapes and are bottled on site to highlight the unique terroir. They carefully apply "canopy management" and "green pruning" techniques to limit yields. They practise "sustainable viticulture", which together with environmental responsibility are one of their priorities.
Chateau Burgozone has wine tasting rooms with a capacity of 50 people. Located among the vineyards is the beautiful Belle Vue Pavilion which offers an amazing view of the Danube River and the island of Esperanto. Some of the activities you can enjoy on the Danube River include: fishing, hunting, cycling, swimming, boating and sandy beaches.
While in the region you can also visit tourist attractions such as the Pleven Panorama, the Prohodna cave, the unique Belogradchik Rocks formation and the Magura cave.
