PloWine – The Journey is a special city walking tour that combines the history of Plovdiv with the culture of wine – from ancient times to the present day. This is an experience for people who want to see the city beyond its facades and understand how wine has shaped its economy, religion, and social life.
City walking tour of Plovdiv
(Main Street, Roman Stadium, Dzhumaya Mosque, Old Town)
The walk begins on Glavna Street – the modern city axis, under which lie layers of ancient Philippopolis.
We will stop at the Roman Stadium – a monumental structure that recalls the time when the city was one of the most important in the Roman Empire.
We will pass by the Dzhumaya Mosque – a testament to the Ottoman period and the cultural diversity of Plovdiv.
In the Old Town, we will immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of the Renaissance houses, cobbled streets, and archaeological remains that tell the story of a city inhabited for more than eight millennia.
Plovdiv – ancient Philippopolis – was a commercial, cultural, and religious center where wine held a special place. Located in the heart of Thrace – a land famous in ancient sources for its wines and the cult of Dionysus – the city naturally became a center of wine culture.
Archaeological Museum – Wine Through the Centuries
The visit to the Archaeological Museum includes a specialized lecture on the place of wine in the life of ancient societies – from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The history is traced through specific archaeological sites and exhibits from the permanent exhibition. The focus is on the ancient Thracians, who attached special importance to wine. We will examine authentic storage and drinking vessels and talk about the role of the drink in everyday life, religious beliefs, and mystery cults. Roman Philippopolis was an active economic center. Archaeological finds and written sources reveal the importance of the wine trade – from ancient markets to cults associated with the god Dionysus. With the spread of Christianity, wine acquired a new symbolic meaning. Its functions changed, but its central role in culture remained uninterrupted.
Finale: The taste of modern Plovdiv
The tour ends with a three-stage wine tasting in an elegant tasting room at the foot of one of Plovdiv's most beautiful hills.
In a relaxed atmosphere, we will make a natural transition from the ancient wine tradition to modern wine production in the region.
