Immerse yourself in one of Bulgaria's most interesting wine terroirs – South Sakar – through the taste of artisan cheeses and boutique wines. This full-day tour departs from Plovdiv and is dedicated to the meeting between the land, tradition, and modern interpretation: tasting Dobrina Delcheva's terroir cheeses and a five-course wine tasting at Bratanovi Winery.
The story behind the cheese: from Krepost to your tasting
In the small village of Krepost in Haskovo, a family tradition is kept alive – the preparation of old artisan cheeses such as krutmach, cheese in a jug, in a clay pot, in clay, and in a pot. Dobrina Delcheva and her husband Kiril Kirev have been reviving recipes preserved for generations for years, adding their own touch: new combinations, different maturing vessels, and carefully selected local ingredients. They experiment with cheese matured in fresh fig leaves, white cheese aged in wine, and even brânza. During the tour, you will taste a selection of these remarkable terroir cheeses, hear about their journey from farm to table, and experience how time and place change every bite.
Wine: five steps to South Sakar
After the cheese tasting and free time for lunch, we continue to the Bratanov Winery near Harmanli – a family winery in the heart of South Sakar.
The region boasts a mild climate, long sunny autumns, hilly and well-drained soils, and winds that keep the vines healthy—conditions that produce concentrated, elegant, and distinctive wines.
At the winery, you will enjoy a five-course wine tasting, presented personally by the hosts, with appropriate appetizers and a story about the varieties, styles, and terroir behind each glass.
